2012 Franklin S. Richards Award and Mobile Legal Aid Clinic
IT’S TIME! A New Year, New Goals, and An Award!
The wonderful service the Philippine Chapter has been providing in the form of giving legal representation has started spreading and has led to the Philippine Chapter becoming the recipient of this year’s Franklin S. Richards Public Service Award. I couldn't believe it. I was seriously dumbfounded when I read the email, but I am not surprised that we won!
Franklin S. Richards Pro Bono/Community Service Award
Through the Franklin S. Richards Pro Bono/Community Service Award, the Law Society seeks to honor members who epitomize the virtues the Society espouses by providing service to the poor, the needy, and the disadvantaged. The award’s namesake, Franklin S. Richards, was appointed as the first General Counsel of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in January 1880. As part of his duties, Brother Richards played a key role in devising and facilitating legislative enactment of the “corporation sole” as a legal entity that allows ownership and control of church properties to pass smoothly when a Church President dies.
This Award is presented during the Law Society’s Annual Fireside which is going to be held and broadcast from Salt Lake City on January 27, 2012. It is an honor to receive the award personally in behalf of the Philippine Chapter and the J. Reuben Clark Law Society International has paid for my round trip airfare from New Jersey (where I am vacationing) to Salt Lake City!
So my congratulations to ALL! Thank you to every single Law Society members who have participated in whatever capacity, degree or locations, in administering legal aid services since its inception and until now! My special thanks to our outgoing Chair, Atty. Rodrigo Reyna, and for the assistance of Atty. Robert Cauilan and Atty. Ernie San Juan in coming up with the draft of the Legal Aid Service Program and their zealous representations of the first case (“Annabel”), which we know was the inspiration for the launch of the Legal Aid Service Programs we now have! The Philippines Chapter truly is indebted to you and we are proud to be part of this group of wonderful legal minds.
Each month the Philippines Chapter will host a Mobile Legal Aid Clinics entitled “HEARTS ATTACK!” in a different location around the country. Individuals needing assistance can come to a clinic where attorneys with different expertise will be available for professional consultation. We are thrilled to announce our partnership with the LDS Employment Resource Center which provides the venue and logistics for the Mobile Legal Aid Clinics.
Why are we doing this?
The Philippines Chapter desires for the Legal Aid Services to be available to many while providing a forum for ALL members to participate in advancing the interests of those suffering legal injustices, in their individual capacity (need not be a practicing lawyer).
The first of this Mobile Legal Aid Clinic is co-sponsored by the Quezon City Employment Resource Center through Jomel Villanueva and set on January 28, 2012 from 9am to 3pm at the LDS Aurora Chapel in Cubao, Quezon City. Co-incidentally, the launch date for this Mobile Legal Aid Clinic is the Annual Fireside in Salt Lake City where the Philippines Chapter will be recognized for its Legal Aid Services! Hence, much to my regret I will not be there. But Atty. Rod Reyna will be the lead along with my Mobile Legal Aid Clinics Co-Chair, Atty. Benito Ambrosio.
I am counting on the HEARTS of those Law Society Members within and nearby Metro Manila to participate either as “legal doctors” (lawyers) or as “legal nurses” (law graduates) who would be helping in the initial interview with “legal patients”, determining which clinic to refer them too and drafting “legal prescriptions” for the “legal doctors”.

So what's next for the Philippines Chapter? We've been hinting about this since November 2011 and have finally put together the plan. So with the NEW YEAR, we are taking the Legal Aid Services Program to the next level!
